Salt spray testing – requirements and interpretation

Salt spray testing requires an agreed method, representative specimens and clear acceptance criteria. A number of exposure hours is not a complete test specification.

Define the test before submitting parts

Provide the article number, drawing revision, substrate, coating system and batch identity. Specify the required test method and duration, the surfaces to be assessed and the acceptance criteria. State whether photographs or a particular report format are required.

Method and product requirements

ISO 9227 describes test procedures; the applicable product specification must define the additional requirements for the component. Confirm the proposed test arrangement with YTSAB before ordering.

Interpreting results

Salt spray exposure hours should not be converted directly into years of outdoor service life. Real operating environments can include changing moisture, temperature, cleaning and wear. The result needs to be considered alongside the product's actual requirements.

Read the official ISO 9227 summary. A reference to the standard here does not establish laboratory accreditation or approval of a particular component.
